Root

The root is the part of the tooth that extends into the bone and holds the tooth in place. It makes up approximately two-thirds of the tooth.

Enamel

The enamel is the outermost layer of a tooth. As the hardest tissue in your body, it helps to protect teeth from bacteria. It also provides strength so your teeth can withstand pressure from chewing.

Dentin

Dentin is a layer of mineralized tissue just below the enamel. It extends from the crown down through the neck and root. It protects teeth from heat and cold.

The point where the crown and the root meet is the neck of the tooth.

Incisors: These are the eight flat, chisel-shaped teeth located at the very front of your mouth (four on top, four on the bottom). Their sharp, straight edges act like blades, making them perfectly adapted for biting and cutting into food.

Canines: These are the sharp, pointed teeth positioned next to the incisors. They are adapted for tearing and gripping tough food, such as meat.

Molars: These are the large, flat teeth located at the back of the mouth. They feature wide ridges used for crushing and grinding food down into a soft paste before swallowing.

Premolars: Situated between the canines and molars, these teeth have a transitional flat surface with two cusps used for both holding and crushing food.

The enamel is the visible, outer white layer that covers the crown of the tooth. It is composed almost entirely of minerals (primarily calcium phosphate in the form of hydroxyapatite).

It is the hardest substance in the human body, making it durable enough to withstand the mechanical stress of biting and chewing food without wearing away easily.
