The characteristics of an ideal respiratory surface:

1. In human beings, the respiratory surface generally refers to the alveoli.
2. It must be permeable to the gases.
3. It should be thin( 1mm or less) to allow diffusion effectively.
4. The respiratory surface must have a large surface area for maximum oxygen uptake in minimum time.
5. It must be richly supplied with blood vessels for maximum oxygen uptake.
